The percentage of Arizona parents citing personal beliefs in opting out of vaccines required for children has increased steadily since 2000 yet remains relatively low overall: 3.4 percent among kindergartners during the 2011-2012 school year, for example.

But Will Humble, director of the Arizona Department of Health Services, looks with worry at other numbers detailing immunizations against diseases such as measles, mumps, whooping cough and chickenpox. Those are ZIP codes around the state with much higher percentages of parents opting out.

The Day Following Our Son's Four Month Checkup

Our beautiful baby boy, beloved son, grandson and brother, was suddenly taken from us and returned to heaven on August 13, 2009. He was born on April 1, 2009, surprising everyone by arriving two weeks early. 

We took our baby to his four-month doctor visit for a check up and immunizations.  His doctor found our son to be very healthy, happy, and developing well.  There were no health concerns.  

Our healthy baby boy, received 5 vaccines.  Two combination vaccines and one oral.  He was truly a brave little guy.  He drank all of the oral vaccine and slightly flinched during the first injection.  However, the second injection really hurt and he broke down in to tears.  He cried loudly for over 20 minutes.  On the way home, I sat in the back seat of our car to console him.  

Little did I know, that ride home together would be our last.  Less than 18 hours later, my perfectly healthy son died.  


During his brief life, he brought so much joy and happiness to his parents and family with his sweet disposition, big smile and adorable giggle. He is survived by his parents and sister; grandparents, aunts, uncles, and three great-grandparents. Services for close friends and family were held on Wednesday, August 19, 2009.
