Why Autopsies Are Performed

SIDS And Child Abuse

Here is one reason why autopsies are automatically performed upon sudden infant death.

Concerned that hundreds of deaths caused by child abuse are being misdiagnosed as sudden infant death syndrome, during 1994, the American Academy of Pediatrics was urging that autopsies be done on all infants that die suddenly or unexpectedly. At the time, Sudden infant death syndrome struck 6,000 to 7,000 infants a year. An estimated 3.5 percent of deaths attributed to SIDS, however, were believed to be actually caused by smothering or poisoning, according to an article on SIDS and child abuse published in the July 1994 issue of Pediatrics, the academy journal.
